(eds.), Brain-Computer Interface Research, SpringerBriefs in Electrical and Computer Engineering, DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-09979-8_6 Abstract We present a radically new way of recording EEG comfortably and unobtrusively over long time-periods in natural environments. This break-through has been achieved using electrodes embedded on a customized earpiece as typically used in hearing aids (Ear-EEG). We illustrate the potential of Ear-EEG as an enabling technology for a number of uses beyond traditional BCI, which are currently limited by the inconvenience of standard EEG recording methods. We show that Ear-EEG enables both conventional BCI and next-generation applications such as the evaluation of hearing capability and the monitoring of fatigue and drowsiness.

Effect of p-CPA Pretreatment on EEG Power Spectra in Experimental Open Brain Injury in Rats

Continuous four hours EEG (electroencephalogram) recordings and its power spectrum analysis using fast fourier transform (FFT) in urethane anesthetized male Charles Foster rats were performed in two groups: open brain injury and p-CPA (para-Chlorophenylalanine) pretreated before brain injury, respectively, and compared with the EEG power spectrum of control rats. The EEG power spectrum analysis...

O16: Long Term Video EEG (AC/DC) Monitoring

Long term video electro-encephalographic (EEG) monitoring (LTM) is defined as the continuous and synchronized recording of EEG and multimedia to analyze brain abnormalities. A conventional LTM system continuously records EEG in the frequency range of 0.5-70Hz. The data synchronization, the high-volume data management, the system reliability as well as noise reduction remain significant challeng...

Continuous EEG monitoring in the PICU.

Since the first human electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded in 1929 by Hans Berger, enormous advances have been made in EEG recording technology and data analysis [1, 2]. The recording period was extended and long-term EEG monitoring became technically feasible when computer applications were introduced in the 1970s and digital EEG recording systems established. However, the use of long-term ...

Concealed, Unobtrusive Ear-Centered EEG Acquisition: cEEGrids for Transparent EEG

Electroencephalography (EEG) is an important clinical tool and frequently used to study the brain-behavior relationship in humans noninvasively. Traditionally, EEG signals are recorded by positioning electrodes on the scalp and keeping them in place with glue, rubber bands, or elastic caps. This setup provides good coverage of the head, but is impractical for EEG acquisition in natural daily-li...

Exploring miniaturized EEG electrodes for brain-computer interfaces. An EEG you do not see?

Electroencephalography (EEG) allows the study of the brain-behavior relationship in humans. Most of what we have learned with EEG was through observing the brain-behavior relationship under well-controlled laboratory conditions. However, by reducing "normal" behavior to a minimum the ecological validity of the results can be limited. Recent developments toward mobile EEG solutions allow to stud...
